Master Woodland Manager (MWM) is OSU Forestry & Natural Resources Extension’s volunteer program. MWMs are small woodland owners that receive 60 hours of training on subject areas that help them improve the management of their own lands as well as help others in the small woodlands community. In return, MWMs “pay back” for the training through volunteer service.

Master Woodland Managers are important assets to OSU Extension Service and to the local small woodlands community. There are many ways that MWMs can volunteer, such as helping with Extension programs and tours; taking leadership roles in local organizations; writing articles; working with youth; providing assistance to other small woodland owners; or whatever suits your interests and skills.

MWM is an advanced training program. Ideally, trainees will have experience managing their own land and/or will have attended previous OSU Extension programs, such as the Basic Forestry Shortcourse, Management Planning, or Tree School. The training involves seven full-day to 1.5-day modules spaced out about once a month. In addition, there will be assignments between classes. Most classes will have a large field component. Sessions will be held in different locations around Clackamas and Washington Counties.

If you are ready to become a more active and informed manager of your woodland, are able to be an active and engaged participant in the training, and are willing to share your knowledge with others, I encourage you to consider the Master Woodland Manager training. The application is posted on the MWM website: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/mwm/. Space is limited. Please apply by April 15th.

To learn more about MWM, go to the website above. Or talk to one of the several dozen MWMs who are active in our area about how the program has benefited them! Or contact me for more information about the training.
